The Academy of Math®!

Some students have a natural aptitude for math, while others struggle - even with good teachers using good textbooks. But a math handicap is not just a career handicap, it’s a basic life handicap. Even a housewife will be a better shopper if she has good math skills. At CCS we are committed to providing every opportunity for every student to achieve the most solid math foundation possible.

CCS contracts with Passport Learning, LLC in Greenville, SC, to offer the “Academy of Math® program to our families. The Academy of Math® is a computer-based math intervention program that comes along side the student’s current math instruction.

The Academy of Math® reliably increases math test scores in a wide range of student age groups. Some struggling math students across grade levels have shown an impressive average gain of 2.1 grade levels after less than ten hours of direct training using the Academy of Math® software.

The Academy of Math® builds math skills from the simple to the complex. Each level begins with a review of key math concepts presented in tutorial format and reinforced through a variety of examples. Students progress through terms, concepts, operations, word problems, and higher-order problem solving (the final mastery step of each level). Students with math delay, those wanting reinforcement of math instructions, and those wanting enrichment for advanced instruction will all benefit from this program.

The Academy of Math® is a software-based program designed to supplement and reinforce key mathematical concepts taught in the classroom. It is a powerful intervention software solution well suited to the needs of elementary, middle, and high school students.

The Academy of Math® contains eight intervention levels that correlate with the fundamental skills for proficiency identified in the Content Standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Each of these eight levels includes the following ten subject strands: numeration, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, equations, measurement, geometry, and graphing.

The Academy of Math® is a lively interactive software program based on four fundamental learning principles.

    1. Accurate Placement: The program begins by determining the most appropriate starting point for every student, suggesting an effective intervention strategy in each case.

    2. Individualized Learning: Students work at their own pace, according to their own abilities - receiving constant feedback to motivate and encourage their progress.

    3. Skills Progression: Proceeding skill by skill, students advance to the next stage of learning only when they have achieved proficiency at the preceding level.

    4. Comprehensive Curriculum: From absolute beginner to basic high-school math, the program allows students to backtrack as far as they need to in order to fill in “skills gaps” and to accelerate ahead as their proficiency improves.

Students work through the program in the dedicated CCS Passport Learning computer lab guided by one of our own professionally trained instructors. Interactive and engaging, the Academy of Math® makes the learning process a captivating one, maintaining student focus and encouraging meaningful time on task. Students work at their own pace, and constant encouragement is given by the animated Computer Tutor. Awards and certificates are given to students each time they master a skill, providing tangible recognition of success and accomplishment that they can “show off” to peers, teachers, and parents.

We are pleased that CCS in King, through the Passport Learning Academy of Math Program, can help students of all ages gain greater confidence and proficiency in math from the simplest concepts through pre-algebra. Interested families are invited to call the school office for more information.
