The Academy of Reading!
Everyone knows that a child’s reading ability determines success in school and also in life. But how can we best help the student who, for whatever reason, just doesn’t read well? And how can we best help the average, or even the good reader become even more proficient in this critical skill? CCS contracts with Passport Learning, LLC in Greenville, SC, to offer their “Academy of Reading” program to our CCS families. The Academy of Reading provides computer-based reading intervention that comes along side the student’s current reading instruction. The Passport Learning program was developed and extensively studied by reading specialists for many years in Canada, then piloted in selected U.S. schools, and finally made available for commercial use. After studying the impressive results of this program used with thousands of students, we established the CCS Passport Learning Reading Center with its own dedicated computer lab for the benefit of our Calvary children. The Passport Program provides much more than simple remediation. It is an accelerated program that identifies students’ weaknesses, then begins instruction in those areas. Students advance quickly through those skills in which they are proficient. Then more advanced skills are developed level by level. First, our own specially trained Passport Learning instructor gives each student a series of skills evaluations that identify areas of weakness. Next, after determining the roots of difficulty, a highly personalized course of instruction is assigned that targets “reading gaps”. Passport Learning’s Academy of Reading is an award-winning program with impressive credentials.
Passport Learning is unlike other reading programs because it targets the very roots of reading weaknesses. Its unique reading intervention software is based on research and programs that have been successfully used with thousands of students for more than 15 years, helping students gain an overall average of 2.5 grade levels in 35 hours of training. Students work through the program in our computerized learning lab guided by our own professionally trained instructor. The software guides a reader through drills and exercises, and helps him reach optimum performance at each reading level. Students work at their own pace, and by the end of 35 hours of training (avg) better speed, accuracy and comprehension is achieved. CCS is one of the few schools in North Carolina that can help struggling, average, and even good readers with this highly effective program, and we are VERY pleased to be able to do so! Interested families are invited to call the school office for more information. To locate other Passport centers and to learn more about Passport, here is a link to the official Passport Learning site: http://www.passportlearning.com.
