Academic Enrichment Opportunities

Perhaps your child struggles and needs to strengthen math and/or reading skills.

Or . . . perhaps your child excels, but you would like to sharpen those all-important math and/or reading comprehension skills to an even greater degree.

Most parents understand that our children’s future ability to advance in a very competitive world will often be determined by their willingness to go the extra mile … to participle in skill sharpening programs beyond the classroom. Some parents will want their good student to enroll in one of the programs summarized below, and push for a higher level of excellence, looking ahead to college prep, etc. Other students need one of the programs below because of math or reading deficiencies. All enrichment programs are available to any student entering any grade for which the particular program is designed. Simply call the office to ask questions and to let us know of your interest. (Cost varies with each program)

MATH:

Some students have a natural aptitude for math, while others struggle. The Academy of Math, part of our Passport to Learning Program, is a computer-based math intervention program that reliably increases math test scores across the grade levels. (See the Academy of Math page for details.)

Quarter Mile Math is an award-winning program used in all 960+ US and Canadian Sylvan Learning Centers, and also at CCS. Quarter Mile Math motivates students to do an incredible amount of math practice in a short period of time with very focused K-9th grade topics (through Pre-Algebra). The format is self-competitive, highly motivating, non-intimidating, and non-age specific. QMM is able to detect the smallest improvements and give positive reinforcement, and is immensely effective for both students with special needs as well as accelerated students. QMM is a software-based program installed in our own CCS computer lab and supervised by a CCS teacher or tutor. Third through sixth grade classrooms are equipped with QMM so teachers can provide remedial help as needed (no extra charge). When a child needs more than can be accomplished in the classroom, after-school tutoring using QMM is available to CCS families for $4.00 per 30-minute session, for as many sessions as desired by each parent or student.

READING COMPREHENSION:

As reading mechanics become more proficient, speed usually increases, reading becomes easier and more enjoyable, and comprehension skills grow. Often, however, certain reading skills don’t develop like they could without special effort. Reading comprehension skills for both special needs as well as accelerated students can be developed to a far greater degree when these skills are strategically exercised and developed on purpose. CCS utlilizes the SRA Program in 1st–3rd grades, and in upper elementary and high school grades, three software-based programs from Merit Software designed to help struggling, average and even excellent readers advance to that next level of mastery and excellence. Depending on the student’s grade or reading level, participants will utilize one of the following: “Reading Comprehension Booster” (3rd – 5th grades); “Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Effective Reading” (5th – 8th grades); “Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Upper Grades” (8th – 11th grades.) Third through sixth grade classrooms are equipped with RCB so teachers can provide remedial help as needed (no extra charge). When a child needs more than can be accomplished in the classroom, after-school tutoring using RCB is available to CCS families for $4.00 per 30-minute session, for as many sessions per week as desired by each parent or student. (This is a good follow-up to the PPL program described below.)

READING MECHANICS:

Reading weaknesses are often rooted in foundational mechanics, which must be effectively remediated before serious comprehension skills can be developed. The award winning Passport Learning Program is nationally recognized to be a highly effective strategy for solving these types of reading difficulties (3rd grade – adult), and we are pleased to have a PPL educator on our CCS staff. (See “The Academy of reading” page  for more details.)

TUTORING:

Tutoring to strengthen academic skills is recommended for some and required for others. The cost for one-on-one tutoring for CCS families is $12.00 per session (except programs listed above). A session is 30-60 minutes long, depending on the age of the student.

Success is often only found in the “extra” mile.
