At Calvary Christian School in King the spirit is sweet, academics are excellent, the environment is safe, the teachers are loving, students learn and have fun, and the Lord is honored!

Kindergarten

The CCS four-year-old kindergarten (K/4) is designed to prepare students academically, socially, physically, and spiritually for five-year-old kindergarten (K/5), and K/5 prepares them for 1st grade. As a child progresses through the four and five-year-old kindergarten classes of Calvary…

1. Students learn many Old and New Testament Bible stories, Scripture memory verses, Bible songs, study Creation, etc. A regular chapel program also emphasizes biblical knowledge, character development, patriotism, etc.

2. Students learn to count by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s and to recognize and write numbers to 100.  CCS kindergarten students also learn simple addition & subtraction, counting & using money, telling time, shapes, sizes, wholes, and halves.

3. Students learn to write in cursive. Instead of teaching children to write using manuscript formation for four years and then switching them to cursive in third grade, we teach children to write using cursive formation from the very beginning, in kindergarten.

4. Students learn to recognize capital and small letters of the alphabet with their phonetic sounds, to combine consonants and vowels to form “blends”, and to combine blends and consonants to form words. Much drilling and practice is provided to develop the degree of instant recognition and mastery needed for reading proficiency.

5. Reading skills advance until students can read full sentences and stories. Spring achievement tests show many K5 students to be reading on a second grade level.

6. Students develop music appreciation, learn many choruses and songs and perform in full fine arts productions.

7. Students develop artistic skills through coloring, painting, cutting, pasting, etc.

8. Students learn the pledges to the American Flag, Christian Flag, and the Bible, and study Community helpers, American History and children of the world.

9. Students learn fascinating things in science about plants, animals, weather, etc.

K/4 performs several little programs throughout the year that of course parents are invited to attend, including “K/4 Olympics”, “K/4 Circus”, and Thanksgiving and Christmas programs.

K/5 students culminate their kindergarten experience with a full graduation exercise complete with all the traditional elements of graduation (caps & gowns, the march, diploma presentation, etc.). Leading up to the graduation march, the K/5 students perform a full fine arts program that many guests have reported to be second to none and very impressive!

Both half-day (8:00 - 12:00) and full day (8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) kindergarten programs are offered at CCS.

Grade School

1st – 6th grades at Calvary are designed to develop all academic, spiritual, social and physical skills necessary for success in future grades.

1. Subjects taught include Bible, English, spelling, reading, math, science, history, poetry, art, music, penmanship, physical education, library skills, and more.

2. In chapel each week we emphasize personal salvation, Bible knowledge, godly living, character development, patriotism, etc.

3. In our lower elementary grades reading instruction is based on the widely acclaimed A Beka phonics curriculum.

4. We use the Saxon math curriculum beginning in 2nd grade (see Saxon Math), which has enabled CCS to achieve class MATH averages 1 – 4 years ahead of the national average in these grades.

5. Excellent, caring, qualified teachers and carefully chosen curricular materials at all levels have enabled CCS to achieve class OVERALL averages 1.3 – 3.3 years ahead of the nation in 1st  – 6th grades.

6. Calvary students also enjoy field trips, pep squad and junior cheerleading for 1st-6th grade girls, intramural basketball with the Calvary Baptist Church program for 3rd-6th grade boys and girls, NC state fine arts competition in 4th-6th grades, “Patch the Pirate” music classes, and more.

Junior and senior high life at CCS is carefully designed and managed to insure maximum development of all academic, social, spiritual, and physical skills necessary for success in life and vocational endeavors.

Three courses of high school study are available leading to a General Diploma, a College Prep Diploma, or a Provisional Diploma. (See Diploma Requirements) Our strong recommendation for all CCS graduates is that they pursue their post high school education in one of several recommended Christian colleges (general diploma required). Calvary also offers a College Prep Diploma track of study, which thoroughly prepares our graduates for the more stringent entrance requirements of University of North Carolina schools. A third track of study leading to an Occupational Diploma is also available for students with certain disabilities. (Approval from both parents and school administration is required.)

Here is a typical course of study for students pursuing a College Prep Diploma at CCS.

Note: All 7-12th grade students participate in Fine Arts during that designated period each day. All Jr/Sr High students choose two out of four main areas of Fine Arts to focus on each year. (Options include chorus, speech, art, & Bible Quizzing.) Fine Arts students produce major and minor dramatic productions, perform in recitals, and compete in the NCCSA Fine Arts Competition each year.

Eligible students are inducted into the CCS chapter of the American Christian Honor Society in the spring of their sophomore year on the basis of Christian testimony, scholarship, character, service, and leadership.

CCS students enjoy exciting interscholastic sports competition with other schools in the Carolina Christian Conference.  Soccer, basketball and baseball for the boys and volleyball, basketball and cheerleading for the girls all contribute to an electrifying Cougar Spirit!

Many clear distinctives make Calvary Christian High School a strong favorite of parents wishing the best academically and spiritually for their children. (See More Points of Distinction)
